David was a man after God’s own heart, but it’s not because of his actions. In fact, the first time the Bible speaks about “a man after God’s own heart,” it’s not describing David outright, but it’s describing the kind of king Saul is not. The prophet Samuel told Saul that the Lord’s Spirit had left him and this new leader of God’s people would be “a man after God’s own heart.” (1 Samuel 13:14)

God didn't choose David to give Israel a perfect king. He chose him to show His children what He could do with an imperfect man whose deepest allegiance belonged to the King of Kings. He gave David the gift of words and of song, and through them, David left his heart split wide open on the pages of Scripture.

The anointing of David as king began long before he took the throne, and his journey to it was long, and anything but expected. He didn’t get a four-year plan from the Lord, and there was no roadmap guiding him to safety as King Saul actively tried to find and kill him. David’s life was in constant danger, and his mind wasn’t quiet. He was anguished with his sin and the sin of those around him, but when his heart was overwhelmed, or his mind was overtaken by anxiety, he anchored himself in God's Word. His desperate cries became songs of worship. His worries turned into peaceful prayers. When he was confronted with the pain and grief he caused others, he cried out for mercy and experienced the Lord’s unmerited forgiveness. 

And when he missed the mark completely, the Lord still showed His faithfulness. 

David learned to trust God in every stage of his life. He was a shepherd, who intimately knew the cost of watching over the weak and fighting the fierce. He was a singer, using words and melodies to calm a man gone mad. He was also a leader in battle, intimately acquainted with both the glory of victory and the anguish of death. David’s life was extraordinary, but the most remarkable part of it all was a heart that was surrendered to the Good Shepherd.

Through the Psalms, David models what it means to be a “man after God’s own heart”: to be captivated by His presence, in awe of His holiness, hungry for His word, desperate for His mercy, and constant in worship. 

As we memorize these verses, may God refresh the joy of our salvation and the sweetness of His Word. Together, let's remember that God isn't looking for a polished image, but He delights in a heart that's fully surrendered to Him.
